Machete-wielding gang rob elderly couple

The robbery of an elderly couple by a gang using machetes has been described as "the lowest of the low."

The couple, aged in their 80s, were threatened in the Tullyhubert area of Newtownards on Friday just before midnight. The gang of three, who all wore masks, forced their way into the house, threatened the couple and made off with some money.

The couple were left unhurt but badly shaken.

Strangford MLA Jonathan Bell expressed his shock following the incident, which he described as "dastardly."

"To steal from elderly people and violate their homes is the lowest of the low," he said. "One wonders are these so-called 'men', who need to mask their faces and go in threes to traumatise an elderly couple, devoid of all conscience and morality? Do they not have parents or elderly relatives of their own?"

Mr Bell appealed to anyone with information to contact police.

Meanwhile, a couple was threatened with a gun and a knife during a burglary at their home in Lisburn in the early hours of Saturday.

The intruders ransacked the house in Lady Wallace Avenue. The couple were badly shaken but unhurt by their ordeal.
