Magilton may be cautioned over daughter attack claims

By Nevin Farrell

An assault charge against the manager of the Northern Ireland under-21 football team could be withdrawn and replaced with a caution, a court heard yesterday.

Jim Magilton (47), from Aberfoyle Gardens in the Upper Malone Road area of south Belfast, had his case mentioned at Antrim Magistrates' Court.

It is alleged the former Northern Ireland international slapped and dragged his 14-year-old step-daughter down a set of stairs by the arms on January 7.

The former manager of Ipswich Town, Queens Park Rangers and Melbourne Victory was excused from yesterday's hearing after his solicitor asked for the case to be adjourned for him to take instructions from his client.

A prosecutor said he had discussed "a way forward" in the case and he believed Magilton was going to take instructions in that regard.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan said if there was to be an alternative disposal or any caution, the defendant would need to be present in court.

The case was adjourned until March 7.
