Mairi and Elena made of write stuff
A teacher and pupil from Northern Ireland have impressed in a global writing competition.
Mairi McCurdy, from Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle, Co Down, and Strathearn School student Elena Gourley finished first and runner-up in their categories in the Commonwealth Class short story-writing competition.
It offers teachers and children aged seven to 14 the chance to celebrate the values of the Commonwealth through creative writing.
This year's theme was peace, and their entries will be presented during a conference in Belfast to mark the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
English teacher Mairi beat hundreds of others with her winning story Birds Eye View, about tree houses, rivalry and resilience.
Elena, a first form pupil, came second in the 11-14 category with her story, a strange and hypnotic tale about inner peace and the comforts of reading.
