Man (23) arrested as police probe death of Derry toddler in bed

By Leona O'Neill

Police investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a young boy in Londonderry eight days ago arrested a 23-year-old man over the weekend.

He was later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Three-year-old Kayden McLaughlin was discovered dead in bed in his Columbcille Court home in the Bogside last Sunday.

Police were called to the scene, and sealed off the area surrounding his mother's flat as investigations began into what caused the death of the toddler.

The Department of Justice confirmed that a post-mortem examination was ordered by the coroner last Monday and, following the completion of radiological investigations, was undertaken during the week.

However, the child's body has yet to be released to the family for burial.

The Bogside flat in which he died has been boarded up and neighbours and friends have left flowers on the railings surrounding the McLaughlin family home.

Last night the PSNI confirmed it had made an arrest in connection with the child's death, and that the suspect had been released on bail.

Police added: "Acting Detective Chief Inspector Peter McKenna has appealed for anyone with information regarding the incident to contact detectives at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 507 of 17/09/17."

Independent councillor Sean Carr, who lives near the McLaughlin family home, said locals had been left reeling by the tragedy.

"The community in the Bogside are still in shock about this child's death," he said.

"We all really feel for this family. They have been waiting so long to get the child home.

"They have been waiting for the funeral to get closure."

He added: "With this length of time, it will be really, really hard on them.

"There are really no words for it."
