Man (24) sent to jail for sexual abuse of young girl

By Michael Donnelly

A 24-year-old Belfast man convicted of sexually abusing a young girl has been imprisoned for 21 months and put on the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years.

The man, who can't be named to protect the identity of his victim, indecently assaulted her during visits to her home between March 2010 and March 2012.

Belfast Crown Court Judge Gordon Kerr said that at the time the man would have been aged at least 19, while the girl, a niece of his mother's partner, would have been 10. Judge Kerr said that the schoolgirl suffered significant trauma in her life as a result.

He added that the man has no history of sexual offending and is regarded as being a low risk of reoffending.

However, Judge Kerr said that in his view there was little mitigation in his case and ordered the abuser to serve 21 months in custody to be followed by an equal period on supervised licensed parole.
