By Staff Reporter

A man charged with the murder of his mother in Portstewart last June has appeared at North Antrim Magistrates court via video-link from Maghaberry Prison.

Alun Kinney Evans (32) is charged with the murder of Margo Evans at their home at Knockancor Drive in Portstewart on June 4 last year.

Mrs Evans was a well-known hairdresser in the seaside town, and had previously owned the popular Madame Margo salon in the resort.

Evans faces a second charge of being in possession of a class B drug with intent to supply. The 32-year-old had been a patient at a secure unit at Knockbracken Hospital in Belfast. However he was moved to Maghaberry Prison in early December, when the Mental Health Order detaining him expired.

During yesterday's short hearing a spokesman for the Public Prosecution Service said "three boxes of files" had now been allocated to a senior prosecutor.

The case was adjourned the matter until February 23.
