Man (45) dies following Castlewellan crash

A 45-year-old man has died following a single vehicle road traffic accident in Castlewellan.

Police have named the deceased as Gary Lennon, who was driving a blue-coloured BMW Series and died as a result of the crash which happened at around 10pm on the Dublin Road on Thursday.

The Dublin Road, from the junction of Burrenreagh Road, Castlewellan, to the junction of Moneyscalp Road was closed over night but was reopened by police shortly after 7am.

Hazzard extends condolences to Lennon family

South Down Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard said: “Knowing the wider Lennon family I’m sure all their hearts are breaking today with this very sad news.

“My thoughts, and the thoughts of everyone in South Down are with all the family and friends at this tough time.”

Police are appealing for anyone who was travelling on the Dublin Road around the time of the incident to contact the police on 101 quoting reference number 1451 of 31/05/18
