Man admits sex assaults on girl
A judge has remanded a 50-year-old man in custody after he pleaded guilty to 12 charges of sexually abusing a young girl over a period of seven years.
The abuse had started in November 1995 when the girl was aged just 13.
A prosecution barrister told Judge Piers Grant at the Crown Court in Londonderry that during the course of the abuse, the defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons carried out a number of sexual assaults on the child, including forcing her to perform sex acts on him.
The defendant also admitted physically assaulting the girl after he returned from a family holiday.
Judge Grant was also told that when interviewed by police officers about the sexual and physical abuse, the defendant denied the crimes, described his victim as a liar and said that she was wicked.
Defence barrister Martin Rodgers QC said that his client's offending was both invasive and sordid and he accepted that it had tarnished the reputation of the victim as well as causing her traumatic distress.
The defendant, who is already on the Sex Offenders Register, was remanded in custody and will be sentenced next Friday.
