By Claire Williamson

A man has been airlifted to hospital after he took a bad fall while descending from the summit of Slieve Donard mountain in the Mournes.

It happened shortly after 5pm on Saturday when the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team responded and located the man just off the summit.

A total of 18 Mourne Mountain Rescue members were involved in the operation.

He was treated for suspected spinal and pelvic injuries along with mild hypthermia.

The three other members of his team were also treated for mild mild hypothermia.

Helicopter assistance was requested due to the location and "potential severity" of the injuries and he was airlifted to hospital.

The rest of the team were assisted off the mountain and the incident was concluded by 10.45pm.
