The bodies of a man and woman were found in a flat in Londonderry city centre yesterday.

Police were called to the building at Great James Street, beside the city's St Eugene's Cathedral, yesterday morning after the father of the deceased man found the bodies in one of the bedrooms.

As relatives began to gather outside the property, the man was identified as Joseph McIntyre, a 38-year-old from the Creggan estate.

The woman's identity has not been confirmed.

Neighbours spoke of their shock at the sudden deaths.

"I can't believe this has happened here," said one woman who wished not to be identified. "This is a quiet street. I don't know the people who died but I know they were young and it is very sad." Sinn Fein councillor Michael Cooper said the community has been left shocked and saddened by the news.

He said: "Police investigations are now under way. There is a sense of shock and sadness in the local community on hearing this news.

"We send our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased at this extremely difficult time."

Police remained at the scene of the incident until yesterday evening.

They said that post-mortem examinations would be carried out in the coming days.

"Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the death of a man and a woman whose bodies were found at a property on Great James Street in Derry/Londonderry," the PSNI said.

"Post-mortem examinations will be carried out in due course."
