A 27-year-old man has appeared in Belfast Crown Court charged with child neglect.
Craig Roe, from Langley Road in Ballynahinch, has been charged with neglecting a 14-month-old baby in his care by failing to seek medical help for facial injuries.
The court heard the charge relates to a period from December 4-8, 2010, when Roe was in a relationship with the child's mother Natasha Gordon at her flat in east Belfast. Ms Gordon is also facing a child neglect charge and will be tried at a later date.
The jury heard the infant's injuries were the result of an assault. Pointing out that neither Roe nor Ms Gordon were facing an assault charge, Mr McMahon said it was the Crown's case that they were aware of the injuries but they failed to get medical help.
Mr McMahon said Ms Gordon and the child's father, Robert Ferris, split up around three months after the youngster was born and they had a formal agreement through which Mr Ferris looked after the child regularly.
Before Mr Ferris picked up the child he was told the child had fallen over in a cot. Mr Ferris took the child to his home but next morning a health visitor was contacted.
The child was taken to the Mater Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital where it underwent tests and one of the medics concluded that the facial injuries were consistent "with slap marks".
