Man armed with metal bar robs shop owner in Co Down village

By Joanne Fleming

A shop owner has been left shaken after being threatened by a man wielding a metal bar.

The woman was walking to her car in the Main Street area of Millisle after locking up her shop on Saturday evening when she was confronted by the man.

He threatened the woman, who is in her 40s, before making off with her mobile phone in the direction of Moss Road.

The incident happened at around 10.15pm in the Co Down village.

DUP MLA Alex Easton condemned the attack as appalling and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

"This is the action of a cowardly individual to threaten a defenceless woman who was closing up her business in Millisle," he said.

"The actions of the individual concerned are totally unacceptable and disgusting and I totally condemn it.

"My heart goes out to the woman involved and I would call for the community in Millisle to unite and show their support for the woman."

Mr Easton added: "I would appeal to anyone with any information to come forward to the PSNI so that the individual involved can be caught by the PSNI and brought before the courts and locked away for this appalling incident. This is not what the community want to see in Millisle and the sooner the individual involved is caught the better."

PSNI Detective Constable Phillip Skelly is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that could assist the investigation to contact detectives at Bangor Police Station. To provide information anonymously the Crimestoppers charity can be contacted on 0800 555 111.
