Man arrested after attempted armed robbery

By Jonathan Bell

This was the dramatic scene as a man was arrested by police after two women were held at knifepoint during an attempted armed robbery.

The incident unfolded in west Belfast in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police said two women, aged in their 30s, were threatened with a knife close to their house in the New Barnsley area at around 2am on Wednesday.

Armed officers were tasked to the scene and the suspect was located in a nearby property.

An eyewitness said around 40 police officers were involved in dealing with the incident.

A large number of police were at the scene before specialist firearms officers arrived, while neighbours watched on as the drama unfolded. A PSNI spokesman said the suspect was eventually arrested for a range of offences.

"He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted robbery, common assault and possessing a blade in a public place," he said.

"He is currently in custody helping police with their enquiries."
