Man arrested on suspicion of arson after Belfast house blaze

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after firefighters rescued a woman and her two children from a house blaze in north Belfast.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service were called to Jellicoe Avenue in Fortwilliam at 1.09am this morning after a car fire spread to a gas box and to the eaves of a semi-detached house.

A woman in her 50's and two children aged eight and 13 were rescued from the house. They were uninjured.

A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson endangering life with intent following the incident.

Police received a report that a car had been set on fire shortly after 1am this morning. Significant damage was caused to the car and a fence as a result of the blaze.

Two appliances were sent to the scene.

Firefighters remained on scene until 4am and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
