Man arrested over Kevin Kearney murder and gun attack on police in north Belfast

Detectives have arrested a man over the murder of father-of-four Kevin Kearney - and a gun attack on police vehicles in north Belfast.

Mr Kearney was gunned down as he walked his two dogs through Alexandra Park in north Belfast last October. His body was found floating in a lake in the park a day later.

Detectives from the PSNI's Serious Crime Branch arrested a 42-year-old man in the Newtownabbey area of Belfast on Thursday afternoon.

He was taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite for questioning and is also being held over the attempted murder of police officers in a gun attack on police vehicles on the Crumlin Road on December 5.

Mr Kearney (46), from Dunmore Avenue, was known to police for previous offending and officers are exploring a possible drugs link to the killing.

The murder was claimed by a group styling itself as the IRA.
