Man assaulted doctor on night out in Belfast

By Alan Ewin

A South African man was convicted today of assaulting a doctor knocked unconscious in Belfast city centre.

A judge dismissed claims that Storm Lane's actions were aggravated by racial hostility. The 24-year-old, with an address at Florenceville Avenue in Belfast, will be sentenced next month, the Courts Service confirmed.

He had denied a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm to Jeevan Jayaprakash.

Belfast Magistrates' Court heard the victim, a medical doctor, was knocked out in a one-punch attack during a night out last December.

He said he was injured by a blow inflicted outside the Merchant Hotel as he went with friends to get a taxi.

The Northern Ireland Court Service confirmed yesterday that the defendant was convicted in a reserved decision. Amid uncertainty over who made alleged remarks it was not accepted that the incident was aggravated by racial hostility. Lane is due to be sentenced on July 21.
