Man charged after attempted hijacking in Derry

A 49-year-old man has been charged following the attempted hijacking of a car carrying a woman and two children in Londonderry.

At around 12.50am on Thursday, police received a report of a man entering the driver's seat of a car while a woman was in the passenger seat and two children were in the rear seats.

He attempted to drive off but was "unable to do so", police said.

The man then tried to take a handbag from the woman, but fled empty handed.

Both children and the woman were unharmed.

The 49-year-old man has been charged with attempted hijacking and attempted robbery.

He is also charged with failing to provide a specimen when in charge unfit, in charge when unfit through drink or drugs and possession of class B controlled drug.

He is expected to appear before Londonderry Magistrates' Court on Friday morning.
