A 20-year-old man has been charged after two men tried to rob a shop armed with a golf club in Londonderry.

The attempted robbery happened at a shop in the Drumleck Drive area of the city on Monday night.

Two men entered the premises with their faces covered between 7.30pm and 7.40pm and one of them attempted to go behind the counter.

As he was stopped by a female shop worker, the second man produced a golf club and smashed a glass counter.

PSNI Detective Sergeant Richard Donnell said: "This was a very distressing ordeal for the staff member. While she was not physically injured, she was left shaken.

“A 20-year-old man has since been charged with a number of offences, including attempted robbery and criminal damage.  He is due to appear at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, May 18.

"Enquiries are ongoing and I want to appeal to anyone who may have been in the Drumleck Drive area between 7:30pm and 7:45pm and saw two males acting suspiciously, or anyone who knows anything about this incident, to contact detectives at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1325 of 13/05/19."
