Man charged over hatchet attack in Londonderry

By George Jackson

A 27-year-old man from Belfast appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court charged with possessing a hatchet at Magowan Park in the Creggan area of the city during a domestic violence-related incident on Wednesday night.

Emmet Padraig Murphy, from Ross Road in Belfast, is also charged with maliciously wounding a man with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm and with assaulting a police officer and a woman. Those offences are also alleged to have occurred during the same incident.

A police officer told the court he would have opposed the defendant being released on bail but for the fact that he lived in Belfast.

The defendant was released on his own bail of £500 to attend court again on November 30.

As part of his bail conditions he's banned from entering within the 30mph zone around Derry except for court appearances and he was also ordered not to have any contact with witnesses in the case. The defendant is also banned from consuming alcohol or drugs.
