Man charged over incident with hatchet
A man alleged to have chased children down a street while brandishing a hatchet has appeared in court.
John Mark Rush (44) was arrested on the outskirts of Derry by a police armed response unit last Friday night.
His arrest was sparked after reports that children and young people on Strathfoyle estate were chased by a hatchet-wielding man.
Police were forced to use a stun gun to disarm the man, who was then taken into police custody.
Residents claimed that a second person had also been involved and a 42-year-old man was held a short time later. He was later released on police bail.
Rush, who lives in nearby Dereen Drive, was charged with possessing an offensive weapon.
The defendant was remanded in custody after no bail application.
