Man charged with £570k VAT fraud

By Eamonn MacDermott

A Limavady man has been charged with VAT fraud totalling almost £570,000.

Mark McAteer (29), of Gortnarney Road, Limavady, appeared at a preliminary enquiry at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He faced three charges of VAT fraud that were alleged to have occurred between January 21, 2009 and March 31, 2009.

It was accepted that there was a case to answer and McAteer said he had no wish to call any witnesses or make any statement at this time.

A defence solicitor said that the value of the goods involved was more than £3m. McAteer was instructed to appear at Derry Crown Court on May 10.
