Man charged with causing the death of cyclist (50)

By Paul Higgins

A Co Down man has been charged with causing the death of a cyclist.

The case against Ian William John Lappin (54) was mentioned at Newtownards Magistrates Court yesterday.

He is charged with causing the death of Stephen Lynch by driving carelessly on the Bangor Road in the town in October last year.

The 50-year-old father-of-five, from the Downpatrick area, died of injuries suffered when his bicycle was in collision with a car close to the Somme Heritage Centre shortly before 5.50am on October 6, 2016.

Lappin, from the Circular Road, also in Newtownards, was not at court yesterday to hear his defence solicitor Chris Logic ask for the case to be adjourned for three weeks "for instructions".

District Judge Mark Hamill adjourned the case to December 1.
