Man cleared of raping ex-partner
A 22-year-old man has been cleared of raping and sexually abusing the mother of his two children last May.
It took the Belfast Crown Court jury of seven men and five women just over an hour to acquit the man of a total of 10 charges, including three of rape, two of sexual assault, false imprisonment, and trespass with intent to rape.
Prosecutor Kate McKay told the court that even though they were no longer in a relationship, the accused had stayed over in her home to help out with the children.
The woman claimed that she awoke to find him raping and sexually assaulting her.
However, the court also heard that following his arrest the man accepted there had been sexual contact between them, but maintained it had been consensual.
