Man critical after Omagh street assault

A man remains critically ill in hospital after being assaulted in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 25-year-old was seriously assaulted at around 3am outside licensed premises on John Street in Omagh.

Police arrested a 29-year-old man who has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Sinn Fein councillor for Omagh, Marty McColgan, said incidents of this kind need to be greatly reduced.

“My thoughts are with the victim’s family,” he said.

“This is a terrible thing to have happened to someone and I hope the young man recovers soon.

“Omagh council is working with other statutory agencies to make our streets safer.

“Incidents like this seem to be occurring on a regular basis, so further steps need to be taken to stop them from happening.”

Detectives in Omagh are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the assault or who was in the area between 2.45am and 3am on Sunday.

They can be contacted on 0845 600 800 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
