Man critical in hospital after Portrush assault involving five people

By Nevin Farrell

A man is in a critical condition after he was assaulted on a night out with his girlfriend.

Police said the 31-year-old was left injured after he was attacked at Dunluce Avenue in Portrush at 1.50am yesterday.

The Northern Health Trust confirmed the man was in a "critical but stable condition" in Coleraine's Causeway Hospital.

A source said: "The man who is from the Portstewart area was out with his girlfriend and was taken to hospital with head injuries.

"At one stage it was looking really bleak for him, but thankfully the situation is alleviating.

"There was an altercation in a bar and it continued outside near a local takeaway."

Portrush Ulster Unionist councillor Norman Hillis said: "This incident which involves five people, both men and women, totally appals me. We want people to come down and enjoy themselves, not to get involved in anything that leads to somebody's life potentially hanging in the balance.

"At any time of year this would be bad, but in the season of goodwill it is totally appalling and has to be absolutely condemned.

"Council has CCTV about 50 yards from where it happened and I hope it has picked up something."

Police have appealed for witnesses.
