Man dies after motorcycle crash in west Belfast

One man has died and a police officer was injured in two separate road accidents involving motorbikes.

A 20-year-old man died after a bike and a car were in collision on the Monagh Road in the Turf Lodge area of west Belfast on Saturday evening, police said.

In a separate accident a female police officer was injured when the motorbike she was riding was in collision with a car at about 9am this morning at the junction of the Malone Road and Windsor Park in the south of the city.

The crash caused the Belfast half marathon to be delayed for a short time.

Inspector John Murphy, from Lisburn Road station said: "An ambulance attended the scene and the female motorcyclist, a police officer, has been taken to hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life threatening at this time."

The woman who was driving the car was not injured but said to be in shock.

SDLP west Belfast Councillor Tim Attwood offered his sympathies to the family of the man who died in a crash on the Monagh Road.

“I want to offer my deepest sympathies to the family of the young man who was killed in a crash involving a motorcycle and a car on the Monagh Road last night.

“This tragic death will come as a shock to the community in Turf Lodge but I have no doubt that they will rally around the young man’s grieving family at this difficult time.'', he said.
