Man dies and sister critical after M2 crash

A man has died and his sister is in a critical condition in hospital following a crash in Co Antrim.

It happened on the M2 close to the Dunsilly roundabout at Antrim on Sunday evening at around 5.45pm.

The man who died was the driver of the dark grey Vauxhall VX220 sports car which left the carriageway and collided with trees after joining the M2 motorway city bound.

According to the Northern Health Trust the siblings are aged in their 40s.

Constable Michael McNee said: "I appeal to anyone who was travelling on the M2 and witnessed the collision close to the Dunsilly on slip or saw the dark grey Vauxhall VX220 sports car on the M2 prior to the accident to contact the collision investigation unit.

“I also appeal to several significant witnesses who were at the scene and left without passing their details to police to also contact the collision investigation unit on 101”.

SDLP Antrim councillor Roisin Lynch urged witnesses to get in touch with police.

She said: “I was deeply saddened to hear of the terrible car crash that occurred yesterday on the M2.

“A family is grieving the loss of a son today and is, at the same time, desperately hoping for the survival of his sister. It is something no family should have to experience. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

“I would urge those people who saw the crash near the Dunsilly Roundabout but didn't pass on their details to the police to get back in touch with them today.”
