A terrified woman who is five months pregnant screamed for help when a man attempted to hijack her car in Londonderry.

The incident happened near Synge Court in the Ballymagroarty area of Derry at around 12.50am yesterday.

Two children were inside the vehicle when the thug jumped into the driver's seat before trying to take off.

A man is due to appear in court today in connection with the incident.

Revealing details of what happened, the PSNI said: "He attempted to drive the car away but was unable to do so.

"He then proceeded to try and take the handbag from the woman sitting in the passenger seat, however he fled the scene empty handed.

"The victim, who is five months pregnant, stood her ground and was able to shout for assistance."

Police said the woman and two children were not harmed.

Detectives later charged a 49-year-old man with attempted hijacking, attempted robbery, failing to provide a specimen when in charge unfit, in charge when unfit through drink or drugs and possession of class B controlled drug.

He is expected to appear before Derry Magistrates Court this morning.

Detective Sergeant Richard Donnell appealed for anyone who was in the area between 12.30am and 1.30am to contact police.

"Did you see anything that might have seemed suspicious, but thought nothing of it at the time? It could be something," he said.
