Man faces murder attempted charge

A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of another man in Ballymena.

Melvin Bamber (23), from Clonavon Road in the town, is accused of assaulting a man in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A detective constable told Coleraine Magistrate's Court yesterday that the accused matched the description given by two witnesses who saw the attack.

The police officer said the defendant had told police he could not remember the incident because he was so drunk. A district judge refused bail and remanded Bamber in custody on the grounds that he believed there was a risk of reoffending and witnesses could be interfered with.

The injured party was left in a serious condition in hospital after he was attacked at 6am on Tuesday at a garage forecourt in the North Road area of Ballymena.

In a separate incident, two men, aged 32 and 33, have been charged in connection with an attack on five people in Downpatrick shortly after 1am on Tuesday.

The group was attacked in the Ballynoe Road area.

Leonard McVeigh (32), from Bridge Street in Downpatrick, was charged with having an offensive weapon. He was released on bail.

A 33-year-old has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.
