Man finds pipe bomb in his garden
A man has had a lucky escape after he moved a pipe bomb from his garden.
The PSNI said the man found it in the rear garden of a house at Shore Crescent in north Belfast, at around midday yesterday, and moved it to nearby waste ground before contacting them.
The subsequent security operation, near Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle, lasted several hours before police confirmed the device was viable.
James Laughlin (72), whose house overlooks the waste ground where the device was left, said: "I am just glad everybody is safe and nobody was harmed in all this. But the man who moved the bomb was either very brave or very stupid."
Another resident, James Thompson (73), said it is a normally quiet area and he was shocked by the incident.
"Police put up a cordon beside my house and I am glad nobody was hurt," he said.
During the alert, which centred on the northern junction of Shore Crescent and the Shore Road, a main arterial route in the city was closed off, causing major disruption.
