Man has car stolen at knife point in Newtownards

A 24-year-old man has been arrested after a car was hijacked at knife point in Newtownards.

Police received a report at around 4.30pm on Thursday August 11 that a man, aged in his 50s, had been approached by a male armed with a knife shortly after parking his car outside his home in the Trasnagh Drive area of Newtownards.

The keys to the car were handed over and it was then driven off towards the Scrabo Road.

The car was alerted to police patrols and located in Downpatrick a short time later.

The car was recovered and the 24-year-old man detained. He was arrested on suspicion of hijacking, possession of an article with a blade or point and driving whilst disqualified.

He remains in custody assisting police with their enquiries.

Inspector Jim McGrillen has appealed to anyone with any information about this incident to contact police in Ards on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
