Man held after assault leaves ear ‘hanging off’

A man has been remanded in custody after an alleged attack which left the victim’s ear “hanging off”.

Mark Anthony Spillane is charged with unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm with intent on November 21.

The alleged victim needed 30 stitches to have his ear reattached.

On being asked if he understood the charge Spillane (21), from Loughview Drive, Enniskillen, replied, “yes ma’am”.

A detective constable told Dungannon Magistrates Court he could connect the accused to the offence. Spillane is accused of headbutting the victim.

He also allegedly bit the victim’s left ear “leaving it hanging off”.

As well as the GBH charge, the incident brought Spillane into breach of crown court bail. He is currently awaiting trial on another charge of assault.

The detective said the defendant denied causing the injuries, but stated he had been “vague” about the night. Spillane accepted the breach of bail.

Refusing bail, district judge John Meehan said: “This is a hopeless application.”

Spillane was remanded in custody to appear at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on November 29.
