A man has been arrested after a masked gang armed with guns and knives stole two cars during the aggravated burglary of a house in Armagh.

The armed trio forced their way into the house at Cathedral Road where they stole a Toyota and a Citroen along with a quantity of prescription drugs.

PSNI Inspector Kieran Quinn said three occupants of the house, two men aged 53 and 26 and a 22-year-old woman, "were left very shaken by the incident", which took place just after 10.30am yesterday.

Police said one of the cars believed to have been taken from the house, a blue Toyota Avensis, crashed after attempting to flee a police vehicle checkpoint on the Armagh to Newry Road, which had been set up following the raid.

A spokesman said: "The Avensis attempted to turn to avoid the vehicle checkpoint and crashed."

One man made off from the car while a 25-year-old was arrested and is currently in custody.
