Man held in £500k VAT fraud probe

A man from west Belfast has been arrested in connection with a suspected £500,000 VAT fraud linked to the construction industry.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers searched the address on Thursday morning and seized accounts and documents.

John Whiting, HMRC assistant director for criminal investigation, said: "HMRC takes tax fraud extremely seriously and anyone deliberately choosing to evade the taxes they owe should expect not only a heavy fine, but possibly a criminal prosecution as well."

The man has been bailed and investigations are continuing.
