Man held over 1994 loyalist murders

A man has been arrested on suspicion of the loyalist murder of two Catholic workmen in North Belfast almost 20 years ago.

Gary Convie, 24, and Eamon Fox, 44, were sitting in their car at a building site in North Queen Street eating lunch on May 17 1994 when a gunman opened fire with a sub-machine gun.

The suspect, 42, was detained in the north of the city today over the two murders, the attempted murder of a third man, and membership of the UVF, a Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) spokesman said.

He has been taken to Antrim police station for questioning.

One man has already been convicted in connection with the murders.
