Man held over bomb attack at Christmas

By David Young

Detectives investigating a pre-Christmas bomb attack in Belfast have arrested a 41-year-old man.

The suspect was detained in the north of the city yesterday and taken to the PSNI's serious crime suite in Antrim for questioning.

Dissident republicans were blamed for the attack, part of a series of incidents targeting the city centre which saw the return of police checkpoints and guards outside shopping centres.

The device, which was contained in a sports holdall, exploded on the evening of December 13 in an area packed with festive revellers.

No one was injured in the blast on Exchange Street West.

A warning had been given but the bomb was left at a different location from that named in a call to a newspaper.

Police were clearing around 1,000 people from several premises when it exploded.

Last month detectives released CCTV images of a cyclist they believed transported the bomb into the city.
