Man held over car thefts

A man arrested by police after crashing a stolen car into a back garden had wedged the car between two trees and couldn't escape from the vehicle, a court has heard.

David Andrew Connor (22) was arrested early on Monday.

Connor, from Downshire Road in Holywood, is accused of stealing two cars, one from outside a house at Rosemount Gardens and the other from outside a house at Helen Street in Londonderry.

A police officer told Derry District Judge Barney McElholm that the defendant, who has more than 60 previous convictions, came to Derry last weekend after he had been released on police bail following his arrest in Ballycastle for drink driving.

After his arrest the defendant, who is charged with 10 offences in relation to burglary and car theft incidents, allegedly assaulted two police officers.

The defendant was remanded in custody until May 30.
