Man held over July 12 police attack

Detectives investigating the attempted murder of officers after shots were fired towards police in north Belfast have arrested a 57-year-old man.

The attack took place at Brompton Park in Ardoyne on July 12 during serious rioting by nationalists.

It followed an Orange Order parade through the Ardoyne shopfronts flashpoint marking the culmination of the loyal order marching season.

Police with shields, helmets and water cannon confronted youths firing petrol bombs, bricks and other missiles.

Immediately after the shooting, police said at least 10 shots had been fired from an automatic weapon, but no-one was hit.

They are treating it as the attempted murder of police officers.

The man was arrested in Ardoyne on Monday morning.
