Man hurt in suspected gas blast

A man has been seriously injured following a suspected gas explosion at a house in Londonderry, police have said.

The house in Bonds Street was "extensively damaged" following the explosion shortly after 10.35pm last night.

A number of local residents were evacuated from the area while firefighters tackled flames.

A spokesman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said: "Police in Derry remain at the scene of a suspected gas explosion at a house in Bonds Street which occurred around 10.35pm last night.

"The house is extensively damaged and a man has been taken to hospital for treatment for serious injuries as a result of the explosion.

"Police and Northern Ireland Fire Service are working to make the surrounding area safe so the road can be reopened and evacuated residents can return to their homes."

Gary Middleton, Deputy Mayor of Londonderry, tweeted: "My thoughts and prayers are with the seriously injured man and his family at this time following the gas explosion in Bonds Street."
