Man in court on explosives charge

A suspected terrorist is due to appear in court in connection with the discovery of a mortar rocket in north Belfast.

The 21-year-old man was charged with preparing terrorist acts and possessing explosives with intent to endanger life by detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland on Sunday night.

More than 30 houses were evacuated on Thursday after officers found the missile at the rear of a property in Jamaica Street, Ardoyne. Police were carrying out searches under warrant when they discovered the bomb.

Following a detailed examination of the device, detectives said it was a horizontal-style mortar which would have been directed at a specific target, probably a vehicle.

Officers arrested the suspect on Friday on suspicion of dissident republican activity before taking him into custody.

The 21-year-old, who is yet to be named by police, is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates' Court.

Ardoyne is a largely republican area with a known dissident republican presence.
