Man in court over murder of constable

A man has been charged with offences linked to the murder of an RUC officer almost 20 years ago.

Constable Michael Ferguson was shot dead while on duty in Londonderry in January 1993. He was 21 years old.

The PSNI said the accused (39) had been charged with four offences relating to terrorism. They include offences linked to the murder. He will appear at Londonderry Magistrates' Court.

Constable Ferguson, a Catholic from Omagh, was shot twice in the head outside Richmond Shopping Centre in the city. No-one has ever been convicted of his murder.

The gun used in the murder was later connected to three other IRA killings. Michael Ferguson was the first officer to be murdered in Derry city in five years.
