Man in dock charged with murder of girlfriend Charlotte Murray who vanished five years ago

By Donna Deeney

This is murder suspect John Miller and girlfriend Charlotte Murray - the woman he is accused of killing.

He appeared in court yesterday charged with murdering 34-year-old Charlotte some time between October 31, 2012, and November 1, 2012.

The widowed mother, twin sister and seven other relatives of Ms Murray were present at Strabane Magistrates Court to see Miller charged.

The 46-year-old, from Redford Park in Dungannon, appeared in the dock flanked by two security guards and wearing grey sweatshirt and jogging bottoms.

He spoke only to confirm his name and address to the court clerk and that he understood the charge against him.

Before the accused was brought to the courtroom, District Judge Oonagh Mullan addressed Ms Murray's family. She told them that while she understood it was "a difficult day" for them, they should remember they were in a court of law and warned "there must not be any outbursts".

A Detective Sergeant told the court that he believed he could connect the defendant with the charges.

Miller has been remanded in custody to appear at court in Dungannon next Wednesday, November 1.

A defence solicitor told the court that no application for bail was being made, nor did she have any questions for the detective.

Originally from Omagh, Charlotte had been living in Moy, Co Tyrone, for two years prior to her disappearance on October 31, 2012.

She was last in contact with her family shortly before then and a missing person's enquiry was launched by police in May 2013.

In February 2015 detectives revealed they were treating Ms Murray's disappearance as murder despite the absence of her body. Her remains have yet to be found.
