Man is arrested after attempt to hijack a vehicle

A man has been arrested after a motorist was threatened by a would-be car thief wielding a needle.

The 20 year-old was detained following an incident in Bankmore Street in Belfast city centre.

At around 6.25pm yesterday it was reported to the PSNI that a man approached a female in a car park and threatened her with a needle.

He forced the woman from her car and got in. But he was prevented from driving off by the victim, who was helped by members of the public.

He was arrested on suspicion of hijacking, criminal damage and possessing an article with blade or point in a public place.

The woman was not injured but left shaken.
