There has been shock after an assault on a popular beach left a young man fighting for his life.
The 22-year-old victim is critically ill in hospital following the assault.
The incident occurred on Tyrella beach at around 7.30pm on Thursday.
He sustained a serious head injury in what police have described as a "one-punch type" incident.
Last night a 21-year-old man arrested in connection with the attack remained in police custody assisting officers with their enquiries.
Detective Chief Inspector Darren McCartney warned that the impact of such assaults can be life changing for all those involved.
"These 'one-punch' incidents have a hugely destructive impact on both victim and perpetrator and the consequences can be devastating, completely altering the lives of all concerned," he said.
SDLP councillor Hugh Gallagher said local residents have been left shocked.
"Tyrella beach is quite a popular tourist destination but locals flock there too, especially on such a warm and sunny day," he said.
"The whole community is completely stunned that this has happened."
UUP councillor Alan Lewis said there have been issues with youths gathering in the area to consume alcohol.
"It can be a particular problem on sunny days," added councillor Lewis.
"But the circumstances of this particular incident are not yet clear."
Police have appealed for anyone who was on Tyrella beach or in the car park on Thursday evening and who witnessed anything that might help to contact detectives.
