Man is killed after an accident in Magherafelt quarry

By Staff Reporter

A man has died following an industrial accident in a Magherafelt quarry.

The fatal accident happened on the Drumard Road just after 2pm yesterday, according to police.

Councillor Sean McPeake said that the local community had been "stunned" by the man's death.

"When the news came through this evening, this tragedy really stunned the locals," he said.

"People in the Gulladuff area are deeply saddened. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased."

The NI Health and Safety Executive has been informed of the incident and will launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatality.

The news comes just a few days after the body of well-regarded local businessman Drew Jordan was found in the quarry he owned at Eskragh, near Omagh.

Mr Jordan's death was described as a "tragic accident" by a clergyman, and is not being treated as suspicious by police.
