Man is killed as workers put up new lamp posts

A man in his 30s has been killed in the centre of Warrenpoint while upgrading street lighting in the town.

He died in an accident on a building site at the Church Street area of the Co Down town in the early hours of Friday.

Local representative Sinead Bradley said the death has left the town "shocked and upset".

She added: "Devastating news that a 38-year-old man lost his life last night when involved in a work accident on Church Street, Warrenpoint.

"It is deeply shocking and upsetting to learn that a young man who was busy at his work met with such an untimely death."

SDLP South Down MP, Margaret Ritchie, sent her deepest condolences to the man's grieving family.

Mrs Ritchie said "The tragic death of a young man working at a site on Church Street is shocking and the thoughts and prayers of the local community are with his family circle.

"The town of Warrenpoint has been deeply moved by this horrible incident where a young man, out to earn his living, has had his life tragically cut short."

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and is examining the cause of the man's death.

In a statement, the safety watchdog body said: "The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland has been advised this morning of the death of a man involved in construction work at a site in the Warrenpoint area.

"Inspectors from HSENI attended the scene immediately and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Our sympathies and thoughts are with the bereaved family at this very difficult time."
