A Co Tyrone man who punched a boy in the face after asking a group of youths where he could buy drugs has been jailed.

James Michael McDonagh (22), of Sydney Lane, Aughnacloy, pleaded guilty to committing the offence on April 5, a day after he was granted High Court bail on unrelated matters.

Dungannon Magistrates' Court heard the boy had taken a short-cut with a group of friends as they walked home.

In the process they passed McDonagh's house, from where he emerged.

He approached and asked the group where he could buy drugs, then removed his cap and punched the victim three times to the face.

Yesterday a defence barrister said that the injuries sustained by the child were "at the lower end of the scale", although they agreed the behaviour was totally unacceptable.

District Judge Steven Keown imposed a two-month prison sentence, along with a £25 offender levy.
