Man remanded after arson charges

A man appeared in court yesterday accused of a series of arson attacks near his home in Co Antrim.

Daniel Weir is alleged to have set fire to an oil tank at Broadlands Gardens, Carrickfergus.

The 19-year-old faces five charges of arson with intent to endanger life.

He is also accused of three counts of placing an article causing a bomb hoax, and a charge of giving false information about a hoax device.

All of the alleged offences occurred in the same area of the town between September 2013 and March 2014.

A detective constable involved in the probe told Belfast Magistrates Court that she could connect Weir to the charges. Weir was remanded in custody to appear again by video-link on April 14.
