Man ‘set fire to his ex-wife’s kitchen’

A man allegedly set fire to his ex-wife's kitchen while his six-year-old son slept upstairs after she revealed she'd had an affair, a jury has heard.

The Belfast Crown Court jury of six men and six women heard that on hearing the revelation on December 9, 2009, Darren Meek (32) pointed a knife at his heart and told his ex-wife “you might as well have done that to me”.

Meek, from Carlan Close in Newtownabbey, denies two counts of arson endangering life and being reckless as to whether the lives of his son and his ex-wife's neighbours would be endangered, causing actual bodily harm to his wife Caroline Wilson, possessing a knife in a public place and causing criminal damage to two tyres.

The jury heard that at interview he denied assaulting her and setting the fire.

The trial continues.
