A man in his 20s in Londonderry has become the latest victim of a paramilitary-style gun attack

A man in his 20s in Londonderry has become the latest victim of a paramilitary-style gun attack.

The victim, who lives in the Bogside area, was shot in both legs after a number of masked men forced their way into his home.

The brutal attack happened shortly before 10.30pm on Tuesday.

It is understood the man was confronted by up to four masked men when he opened the front door of his flat in Meenan Square.

The men forced their way into the property where they carried out the attack.

The victim remained in hospital last night.

While his injuries are not life threatening, they are understood to be life changing.

There was little evidence yesterday of the brutal shooting, or of the subsequent petrol bomb attack on police officers carried out by a small number of youths in the Bogside afterwards. But local residents were disgusted by what had happened.

One woman said: "I think the whole of Derry is fed up hearing about young people being shot by these anonymous gunmen who think they are law and order in these parts.

"He may just have looked at one of these boys the wrong way and what kind of a society is that? It is disgusting what is happening on our streets but you have politicians who live not a million miles away and they couldn't care less."

The Chair of the Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Councillor Martin Reilly said: " The people of this city are shocked and disgusted at these continued incidents.

"There can be absolutely no justification for these shootings. It is clear that those responsible have absolutely no concern for people living in the Bogside nor do they represent the interests of the people living there.

"My thoughts are with the young victim and with the people living in the area who have had to endure this."

Sinn Fein Foyle MLA Karen Mullan added: "This is not what the people of this area want or need and those responsible must stop."

The PSNI described the attack as "completely reckless".

Detective Inspector Hughes said: "The fact those responsible thought it was acceptable to shoot in a built-up area shows the contempt they have for people in the community.

"The bullets could have strayed at any moment and hit someone passing by, or struck another property. It is utterly appalling."
